The Pakistan Meteorological Department said that the new moon of Muharram will be born on the crossing conjunction point at 11:32 pm on 17th July. Therefore, the Muharram Chand 2023 will be sighted the next day, on the 18th of July.

According to PMD,

“There is a slight chance of sighting the new moon of Muharram, 1445 AH on the evening of 18-07-2023 i.e. on 29th of Zilhaj, 1444 AH,” the PMD said in a notification issued in this regard.

The central committee for the Muharram moon sighting will observe the crescent in Quetta under the chairmanship of Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad.

The Islamic year in Pakistan and other Muslim countries begins with the sighting of the Muharram Moon. Muharram, called Al-Hijra, is the first month of the Islamic calendar. Muharram means “Forbidden” and is one of the four sacred months of the Islamic year, including Ramadan.

The Islamic calendar is lunar, and the Islamic months varied from the Gregorian calendar.

There are 12 months of the Islamic Calendar and here is the list of Islamic months:

The federal government has issued an official notification regarding the Ashura holidays. Public holidays on 28 and 29 July (Friday and Saturday) will be observed for the 9th and 10th Muharram.
