Currently, the Pink Eye epidemic has spread in Pakistan. The majority of people in Punjab and other provinces are facing the Pink eye epidemic. There are a large number of cases of Pink Eye, and the numbers are increasing day by day in all major cities. 

A large number of school-going children have been facing eye infections; therefore, Punjab’s interim Chief Minister, Mohsin Raza Naqvi, has announced a one-day holiday for all government and private schools in Punjab on 28th September. 

What is the pink eye epidemic? 

Pink Eye, or conjunctivitis, is a painful eye condition in which the conjunctiva becomes inflamed. Pink Eye is a transmitted infection caused by a virus, bacteria, or allergies.

Symptoms of Pink Eye :

There are many symptoms that are contributing to the pink eye epidemic in Pakistan. Some of them are as follows:

  • Swollen eyelids
  • Redness in eyes
  • Discharge from the eyes
  • Itching or burning in the eyes
  • Sensitivity to light

Sharing your towels and personal items is also the cause of getting an infection. Such things increase the increase the risk of infection transmission.

3. Overcrowding: 

The pink eye epidemic in Pakistan is also spreading quickly in crowded areas where you come in contact with infected individuals. Avoid going to markets and shopping plazas.

4. Air pollution: 

Air pollution is also the leading cause of irritation and burning of the eyes. Pakistan is one of those countries in the world that have the worst air quality. 

5. Weak immune system: 

Pink eye infections are more likely to occur in people with weakened immune systems.

Pink Eye Treatment: 

In most cases of pink Eye, the symptoms go away within a few days. People with severe symptoms of pink Eye need to visit a healthcare physician as soon as possible. The doctor will prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment to get rid of pink eye infections.

Here are some tips you need to follow to get rid of infection; 

  • Do wash your hands more frequently with soap and water.
  • Avoid touching your eyes with dirty hands.
  • Apply a cool compress to your eyes when you feel a burning sensation.
  • Don’t wear lenses.
  • Wear the sunglasses inside or outside of the house. 

Precautions to avoid pink eye infection: 

  • There are some precautions to avoid pink eye infection, such as; 
  • Do practice good hygiene.
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Avoid touching your eyes with contaminated hands.
  • Do not share your towels and other personal items with other family members.
  • Clean the infectious surface of the eyes.
  • Stay at home.
  • Don’t send your children to school until the infection is gone.
  • Try preventing spreading it to others.
  • Avoid close contact with infectious individuals.
  • Wear Masks
